چکیده

The study of the IgG subclasses of antibodies across the clinical spectrum of leprosy id not reveal differences that could be related to the Th1/Th2 dichotomy; the predominance of antibodies of the IgG1, 2 and 3 subclasses suggest a possible Th1 response across the spectrum in Venezuelan patients. In contrast, the anergic form of American cutaneous leishmaniasis was characterized by a strong IgG4 specific antibody response, suggesting a Th2 response, while localized forms of the disease appeared to be associated with responses of the Th1 type. Persisting antibodies to phenolic glycolipid-I in a small percentage of clinically inactive multibacillary patients may reflect differences in the catabolism of this unusual antigen, since persistence was not associated with a unique initial IgG subclass response to a complex extract of Mycobacterium leprae antigens.

Immunopathogenesis of Leprosy: a Model for T Cell Anergy

Leprosy is a model disease for understanding human immune responses underlying diseases caused by intracellular pathogens, as well as providing valuable insights into autoimmune disorders and cancer. This review addresses the unresponsiveness/anergy of host T cells to the causative pathogen Mycobacterium leprae and describes both the adaptive and innate immune responses observed during the clin...

Poliovirus-spectfic CD4 + Thl Clones with Both Cytotoxic and Helper Activity Mediate Protective Humoral Immunity against a Lethal Poliovirus Infection in Transgenic Mice Expressing the Human Poliovirus Receptor

Sua'mmary The current understanding of the function of CD4 + T helper (Th) cells in immunity to infectious diseases is that Thl cells, which secrete interleukin (IL)-2 and interferon-3,, induce cellular immune responses, whereas Th2 cells, which secrete IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, and IL-10, provide helper function for humoral immunity. We have used a panel of poliovirus-specific murine CD4 + T cell clon...

The expanding universe subsets : Thl , Th 2 and Tim

he T helper 1 (Thl) and Th2 patterns of cytokine production were originally described among mouse CD4’ T-cell clone@ and later among human T cells’. Mouse Thl cells produce interleukin 2 (IL-2), interferon y (IFN-y) and lymphotoxin (LT), whereas Th2 cells produce IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-9, IL-10 and IL-13. Human Thl and Th2 cells produce similar patterns, although the synthesis of IL-2, IL-6, IL-1...

Humoral immunity in leprosy: immunoglobulin G and M antibody responses to Mycobacterium leprae in relation to various disease patterns.

A solid-phase radioimmunoassay, applying whole Mycobacterium leprae as antigen and radiolabeled protein A from Staphylococcus aureus as antibody-detecting reagent, was used for the determination of specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibody responses in leprosy patients. High IgG anti-M. leprae antibody levels were found in lepromatous leprosy patients, whereas the antibody response in tu...

1358 Helper and Suppressor T Cell Activation by Pvp

Type 2 antigens such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), 1 type III pneumococcal polysaccharide ($3), and dinitrophenyl (DNP)-ficoll characteristically elicit antibody responses in mice that consist almost entirely of antibodies of the IgM and IgG3 isotypes (1-4). Type 2 antigens also are generally unable to prime mice to produce I gG 1 and IgG2 antibodies after secondary challenge, i.e. they are un...
